Jim Dixon (hotun Brand Ambassador)
Jim sent us a case study retrofitting hotun detect and a hotun dry trap tundish to an existing installation.

Jim Dixon – Stewton Pplumbing and Heating – Louth
Jim has been a hotun Brand Ambassador for over a year. Before he became one of our Brand Ambassadors, he was already using our hotun products to help his installations. In this case study, Jim describes the problems faced by his customer and what he did to overcome the issue.
His customer asked “There is water dripping through the tundish, what can you do to stop that?”
Jim Dixon
“A regular customer of mine called me regarding water dripping from the unvented cylinder and through the standard tundish. The customer had only just noticed this, it had been dripping for some while and he is now dreading seeing his next water bill!
I explained to him that as the expansion vessel was filled with water, and could no longer take any expanding water. This was resulting in the pressure in the cylinder reaching 6 bar each time the hot water was run and the cylinder came up to temperature again.
I explained that the safety relief valve was (correctly) opening to let this excess pressure dissipate and that resulted in the hot water running through the tundish. He then understood the importance of having the cylinder serviced regularly and occasionally checking the tundish.
The solution
I resolved the issue by recharging the expansion vessel and replacing the 6bar PRV. I recommended that the D2 discharge pipe was brought up to regs, as the tundish was out of day to day sight. This is why he had not noticed the dripping through the tundish.
I replaced the standard tundish with a hotun dry trap tundish & included a hotun detect alarm. The alarm unit gives the customer the comfort of being able to get an automatic and audible alert if any more water starts to drip from the PRV (secondary fault indication).
The customer was more than happy to go with my recommendation & the hotun detect alarm is now in place. The customer is now safe in the knowledge that if an issue occurs again, they will be alerted straight away and then promptly call me to fix the issue. Potentially saving on any future high water bills!!“
Case study retrofitting hotun detect – Pictures
Here are the before and after pictures.
It was so easy for Jim to swap out the old standard tundish and replace with a hotun white 100C 15×22 (product code – HW100C 15×22) dry trap tundish. A hotun detect alarm unit (product code HDSW-1P) is also making sure that the customer is alerted to any issues, automatically.

Before – with a standard tundish that was difficult to see into

After – hotun dry trap tundish and hotun detect alarm unit
Please also note that the hotun detect alarm unit allows the installer to write their phone number on the case of the product. This means that they get the call rather than the customer phone up another installer by mistake, and then you lose out on any paid remedial work
