Dan Tempest (hotun Brand Ambassador)
We were sent a case study, for the replacement of an unvented hot water cylinder and the fitting a hotun dry trap tundish and hotun detect alarm unit to the new installation, from Dan Tempest.

Dan Tempest – ST Plumbing and Heating – Knottingley West Yorks
Dan is one of our original hotun Brand Ambassadors and an avid supporter of hotun. He has been using our hotun products to help his installations for a long time. In this case study, Dan describes the problems he found on a call-out to an unvented cylinder problem.
His customer asked, “Where is the water coming from, I can’t find the leak?” In his investigations, Dan easily found the reason why….
Dan Tempest
“Upon attending a call out to a leaking unvented cylinder, it was clear that the cylinder itself had split. Upon further investigation, we saw that the expansion vessel had failed (due to lack of maintenance) and was more than likely the cause of the cylinder failure due to working at excessive pressure constantly (NB on this model the TPRV opens, due to pressure, at 7-8 Bar so the whole system experiences this excessive pressure (due to expansion) each time it comes up to temperature and the system stays at that pressure until someone opens a tap!
Hidden point of discharge
Although the pressure relief had been activating, the tundish had been located behind the cylinder. Therefore, the customer was unable to see this happening, and the outlet discharged to an area of the property that was unused by the customer! This meant that they were only aware of an issue when the cylinder split and water became visible on the downstairs ceiling.
To ensure that the customer becomes aware of any (future) dripping from either of the safety relief valves installed, we fitted a hotun detect PRV alarm unit onto a hotun dry trap tundish. I recommend these to all my customers for precisely this reason. They are great value for money and can save the customer not only from wasting dripping hot water but also the cost to repair a failed cylinder!
We have also replaced the failed and ageing unvented cylinder, with the Oso Super Coil 150 L, including alterations to the pressure relief to comply with G3 regulations.
An incredible cylinder that maximises space, all pipe, valves and vessels housed under a removable lid, fast heat up times and low heat loss and factory fitted pressure control valves, safety valves and expansion vessels.
Always check engineers are competent and qualified to carry out the work you need doing on an unvented system; alternatively, save yourself the stress and contact us instead!”
Case study Unvented Cylinder Replacement – Pictures
Here are the before and after pictures.
Previously the tundish could not be seen, but Dan has now relocated the tundish to the front. He used the hotun white 100C 15×22 (product code – HW100C 15×22) dry trap tundish, with the hotun detect alarm unit (not in the picture)(product code HDSW-1P). The alarm unit, now gives an instant audible alert and visual confirmation of any passing water from the PRV and TPRV and through the tundish.

Please also note that the hotun detect alarm unit allows the installer to write their phone number on the case of the product. This means that they get the call rather than the customer phone up another installer by mistake, and then you lose out on any paid remedial work
